How often should a gym be professionally cleaned?

Members notice a dirty gym before they notice anything else. The answer is not one frequency but three layers: daily, weekly and periodic.

Rows of dumbbells on a gym rack

A gym gets heavier use per square metre than almost any other commercial space. Sweat, chalk, rubber dust and wet change rooms build up quickly, and members judge the whole business by what they see and smell. The right cleaning frequency depends on your opening hours and member numbers, but most gyms need the same three layers of work.

Every day

  • Equipment touchpoints. Handles, grips, seats, pins, benches and cardio screens.
  • Change rooms and showers. Toilets, basins, showers, benches and floors, with bins emptied and consumables restocked.
  • Floors. Vacuuming or sweeping rubber and carpet, and mopping hard floors and entry areas.
  • Reception and common areas. Counters, door handles, water stations and glass.

Twenty-four hour gyms often need a second, lighter visit during the day, focused on change rooms and high-use equipment.

Every week

  • Detailed cleaning of machine frames and the areas under and behind equipment.
  • Descaling showers and wiping down walls and partitions in wet areas.
  • Mirrors, interior glass and high-touch walls.
  • Vents, skirting and the corners that daily cleaning misses.

Periodically

  • Rubber flooring deep cleans to lift sweat and grime from the surface.
  • Carpet cleaning in studios, offices and reception.
  • Floor stripping and sealing for vinyl and other sealed hard floors in high-traffic areas.
  • Pressure washing of entrances, footpaths and car parks.

Fitting cleaning around opening hours

Most gyms are busiest early in the morning and in the evening, so the main clean usually happens late at night or before opening. Agree the window in writing, along with alarm codes, keys and who to call if something is wrong. That way the work gets done every visit, not just when it is convenient.

Put it in a written scope

A written scope lists each area, the tasks and how often they happen. It is the easiest way to compare quotes fairly and to check that what you are paying for is being done.
